Overview
As a renewable alternative to petrochemical-derived succinic and adipic acid, Biosuccinium® offers a drop-in solution for existing industrial processes with a substantially reduced environmental impact. It serves both as a direct-use chemical in various industrial formulations and as a key intermediate for bio-based polymers, resins, and plasticizers.
This best-in-class succinic acid demonstrates superior sustainability credentials, including up to 90% lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to petro-based adipic acid, and 53% lower GHG emissions compared to conventional succinic acid.
Additionally, the production process avoids the formation of salt by-products, consumes less energy, and locks carbon dioxide into the final molecule, contributing to carbon sequestration.
Applications
Biosuccinium® is used across a wide range of applications, including:
- Bio-based polymers such as polybutylene succinate (PBS)
- Polyester polyols for polyurethane foams and coatings
- Composite and coating resins
- Phthalate-free plasticizers
- 1,4-butanediol production
End-use products include:
- Biodegradable packaging and disposable goods
- Coatings and paints
- Sustainable apparel and footwear
- Household goods
- Anti-corrosion and heat transfer fluids
A specialty grade, Biosuccinium® S, is available for high-purity applications, ensuring ultra-low levels of heavy metals (arsenic, lead, and mercury < 0.1 ppm).
Key Benefits
- 100% biobased content (USDA certified)
- Significantly reduced GHG emissions (up to 90% compared to petro-adipic acid)
- Drop-in alternative to petro-based succinic and adipic acids
- Low energy fermentation process using non-bacterial yeast-based technology
- No salt by-products during production
